Rhonda talks about GINA

GINA 2007 the Genetic Information Non-Discrimination Act

Genetic discrimination due to genetic testing has caused great controversy. Although, the
benefits are extraordinary the chance of this information getting in the wrong hands is great. This is way of separating the physically fit in the human population or labeling the unfit. For me one outside negative factor is being able to know the future health status of your child. Some diseases will not affect a person until adulthood so why do the parents need to know. I think we have to remember how many great accommplishmets were done by people who died young due to illnesses. Insurance companies really should not have access to that information. The companies will be able to cross reference couples genetic history when they get married and decide whether they are insurable. Genetic testing also exposes a familial disease. This could lead to genetic discrimination in employment or insurance.

I believe GINA 2007 is a good idea. The notion that one an be protected against health discrimination is a big goal!! The genetic information could be used to help predict disease.
By getting an idea of a disease that may arise in the future can help with early detection. One can keep a close eye on the probability of the development of the disease. The genetic tests may also help aid in treatment options. Some genes may be present in individuals who don't respond well to certain treatments. It can also help a physician decide if the patient will have specific side effects to the treatments. Scientifically, these factors can be very advantageous to the patient. Realistically, if the GINA 2007 act doesn't truly and fully protect the patient than the patient will not want to take the tests. I would personally still use an alias name if I were to undergo genetic testing, just to try to protect myself from employment and health insurance discrimination.
